About
Every writer was unknown once.
Keats published in The Examiner before anyone knew his name. Hazlitt made his reputation in the reviews before he made it anywhere else. Eliot built The Criterion into the centre of serious criticism in English. The great reviews (the Edinburgh, the London Magazine, the early TLS) were where careers began, where arguments entered the record, where a writer first became a writer in the eyes of the world.
The Astyanax is that, now, for a new generation. It publishes essays, criticism, fiction, poetry, lectures, and interviews across literature, history, philosophy, classics, and politics. It holds all of them to the same standard, whoever wrote them. An undergraduate with a serious argument, or a serious story, is welcome here on exactly the same terms as anyone else. Publication is a credential: a record that the work was read by an editor and judged worth keeping.
